Why Life Groups?
From one small Life Group of 12 disciples, Jesus launched a movement that changed the world. He’s still changing the world through the legacy of that first group, and he’s doing it, in part, through the ministry of smaller community gatherings at Waterline Church. We want to invite you to join in this movement that is changing the world, one life at a time.
A Life Group is a transformational community. Not cheap community. Not virtual community. Not what-we-happen-to-have-in-common-at-the-moment community. Not small-talk-in-passing community. Not community when it’s convenient. Transformational community.
From the cities to the suburbs to the most rural outposts, there is a pandemic of loneliness and isolation in our culture. The vast majority of the people in churches, neighborhoods or workplaces are deeply lonely-this is one of the most crippling crises of our time.
Without healthy relationships, we are ill-equipped to answer the most important questions in life: Who am I? Who is God? What am I doing here?
“My Life Group is a place where I can love & grow with my family. It’s shown me that many other people go through the same struggles as I do, and I don’t have to go through trials alone. I can be real with them and share all that I am going through while being there for other people.”
What are Life Groups?
Life Groups are a critical component of Waterline Church’s mission. Life Groups create space for true life transformation to happen. By loving God and loving others in this way, we bring life to every neighbor and neighborhood, until God is first in every heart and every home.
Love God and Love Others:
Life is better together. There are relationships that come into your life that, looking back, you would say were a God-thing. God regularly uses these powerful relationships to help grow our faith and show us what it looks like to follow Christ.
Bringing life to every neighbor and neighborhood:
When you begin to serve others, whether it’s working together at a homeless shelter, serving together at Waterline on a ministry team, or using your talents, time and treasures in other ways, you will see your faith grow as God meets you at your point of service.
Life Groups exist outside the four walls of the church, so they can engage and impact the community where they meet. Waterline Life Groups are actively expanding the love of Jesus into the daily lives of their neighbors, co-workers, schools, and markets.
Until God is first in every heart and every home:
Waterline Church wants everyone to experience the God-first life, empowering every home to love God with all of their heart, mind, soul and strength. And to be on mission together, loving others in our day to day comings and goings.
Life is better together!
We are shaped by those we spend the most time with. Growth in your relationship with God should be a natural outcome of being a part of a Waterline Life Group.

What is a “Family Friendly” Life Group?
A “Family Friendly” Life Group offers child care that is time sensitive to your busy schedules. These Life Groups start and end at a reasonable time for families juggling the demands of school work, sleep schedules, or sports. Children have a structured plan for making the time as fun and meaningful as possible! Finally, all of our groups are safe. The most important people in our church are our children, and we take safety very seriously.
What Happens in a Life Group?
Life Group is a party with a purpose.
Just like at a party, all kinds of people show up. Someone brings some food and people are catching up on the previous week. New guests are introduced and welcomed to the party.
If there are kids, they are probably loud and running around. Soon they will be working on homework, watching a movie or playing a board game.
The Life Group Leader calls the group together and formally welcomes anyone new to the group. The group participates in a conversation based on the teaching from the previous weekend’s Experience, or what they have been personally reading in the Bible. The point of this conversation is to encourage each other in how we are growing in our faith and taking next steps in our faith journey. Our goal is to encourage you.
The group finishes the conversation with a prayer. Don’t worry, you won’t be asked to pray outloud unless you indicate you are willing to. Finally, the group will spend a few moments going over details or making plans for the next project to serve their community or the next party.
The group follows a pattern similar to this and typically last about 75-90 minutes.
- Food/Hang out
- Prayer Together
- Planning the next Service Project in the community or party
